The Degree Works code for the 2022-23 Metropolitan State University of Denver academic year is now in the testing phase, and all programs should be checked in the new code by July 26. Department chairs, advisors and/or curriculum experts from each department should ensure that at least one designee has tested at least one student in all majors in the department.

The new catalog code is good news for students as it is now implementing the General Studies policies to allow for students to take General Studies courses in their major prefix. Due to these massive changes, the catalog entries for all programs on campus were edited to put programs in a common template, and many of these programs then required a change of code in Degree Works. Now, nearly all the programs’ codes have been changed and need testing.

Testing keys

How to test:

  • Use the link received via email to department chairs.
  • Log in through Global Protect if working from home.
  • Run a “What If” report for the new catalog year for a few students to ensure that the requirements match with the updated catalog entry
  • When choosing students, it could be helpful to pick one who is in your major and took a General Studies course to see how the courses may now appear in multiple places.

What to watch for:

  • Make sure the total required credits in each section is correct.
  • The grade point average requirements are correctly stated.
  • If a minor is required for non-extended majors, ensure the requirement for a minor is represented in the Degree Block as well as the Major Block.

The test environment does not pull live data and is instead pulled from December, so the completion of spring courses for students you are familiar with in the test environment may not be seen, nor may the classes they are taking this summer or fall.

After the testing deadline of July 26, any bugs will be worked out and the code will go live the second week of August. This means all incoming freshmen and transfer students will be able to run a degree progress report.

Other benefits of the new catalog code:

  • Students can seamlessly change majors without their General Studies fulfillment changing.
  • Transfer students will not lose General Studies fulfillment when declaring a major.
  • Code is simplified to make future curriculum changes easier.

Any questions, discovered bugs or requests for access to the test environment can be addressed to the degree audit coordinator, Loriann Ankele-Garcia or the associate registrar of Curriculum and Systems, Sean Murphy.
