Introducing one of the colleges of business’s recruitment and retention initiatives: Connect Week!

Back in Fall 2023, the College of Business launched a new event that would turn out to be a lively, fun event that both faculty and students look forward to each semester. As the hub for all business majors, we strive to enrich our students’ learning experiences by providing them with sources they can use to excel in all aspects of their college journey.

Connect week is an event that spans two days every semester and is led by faculty members where they supply refreshments, snacks, and food, and attempt to connect as well as help answer any questions students have. They help answer inquiries about classes, majors, careers, and just life in general. Some of the services that join us at our connect week are the Advising Center, Tutoring Center, C2hub, MBA programs, and more!

This event has been pioneered by ample faculty from all over the college of business, and managed by Peter Dreifuss, the College of Business’s Recruiting and Retention Specialist.

Huge thanks to this event’s faculty leader, John Wilkerson, for going above and beyond with his efforts to help students in any way possible! Make sure to check out his personal statement below for further information about this event.

Connect Week Statistics

In an attempt for the college of business to give back to its students, connect week has seen remarkable feedback all over. Here’s a glimpse into some statistics we have collected about this event’s results:

  • 5 student organizations that participated and engaged with students.
  • 27 faculty members who donated their time and food to support our students.
  • Nearly 100 survey responses collected, providing valuable insights.
  • 55 boxes of donuts (660 total!) enjoyed—because nothing brings people together like food!
  • 176 bags of popcorn, chips, granola bars, candy, and other assorted snacks shared with students throughout the event.
  • 1200+ total interactions with students and community members throughout the event

John Wilkerson, faculty lead’s statement:

Like all faculty, I admire anyone who invests the tremendous time, money, effort, and energy it takes to get an education. They not only make their own futures better, but they also make the future better for everyone around them. So sometimes when walking around campus and seeing students hustling to classes with a load of computers and books in a backpack, I want to grab them by the shoulders and say, “Hey! You are awesome, and we care so much about you!”

Going to college can feel like a lonely business—especially after the social whirl of high school. You don’t often hear the thousands of people who are cheering you on—but they are there. That is why we launched Connect Week. It is a small opportunity for us to make students feel seen, admired, appreciated, and supported.

I was worried about the event being very static, with teachers sitting awkwardly behind tables as students rushed by to their classes so I was therefore delighted to walk in and see so many people engaged, laughing, talking, and munching on faculty-donated snacks. It is part party, part networking, and part celebration. There was a lot of mutual love in that room, and a feeling of the importance of the mission that we were all engaged in: staff, admin, faculty, and students alike.
