Welcome aboard

Welcome Faculty!

Welcome to the Community Engaged Learning (CEL) section, formerly known as Service Learning. MSU Denver is committed to integrating academic coursework with community needs through CEL—a transformative approach that enhances educational experiences and community well-being.

Why Teach a Community Engaged Learning Course?

CEL engages communities in scholarly inquiry and creative activity, enhancing the application of academic knowledge. It transforms the classroom experience by providing all participants with opportunities to engage deeply in scholarly inquiry, gain professional development, and prepare for active community involvement.

Student and Community Impact:

  • Community Needs: Identify and address specific community challenges.
  • Reflective Learning: Encourage students to reflect on their community contributions.
  • Mutual Benefits: Ensure both students and community partners gain from the experience.

Faculty Support for Community Engaged Learning:

  • Training and Orientation: Comprehensive sessions on CEL best practices.
  • Structural Framework: Guidance on course design and CEL integration.
  • Resources: Templates, pedagogical materials, and support for successful CEL courses.

Community Engaged Learning Tracking & Designation

Tracking Community Engagement:

Are you already engaged in community partnerships through your courses? Let us know! We encourage you to report your CEL activities directly to Nora Bashir. We provide support and guidance on compliance with MSU Denver’s policies, including Workers’ Comp and Liability Insurance.

CEL Designation:

The CEL Designation formally recognizes courses that effectively incorporate community-engaged pedagogies. It is intended for faculty who are either already practicing CEL informally or are interested in integrating these practices into their courses. Nora Bashir offers resources, support, and consultation to help faculty align their courses with CEL best practices and achieve designation status.
