The MSU Denver Alumni Association has released a powerful new episode of its podcast, BirdTalk, featuring 1999 graduate and nationally recognized social worker Zander Keig. His episode is the first of Season 3 of BirdTalk.

A first-generation Latino American, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and subject-matter expert in LGBTQ+ veteran care, Keig shares his inspiring story of resilience, identity, and advocacy. The episode explores his unconventional journey—from high school dropout to MSU Denver student, from seminary to social work, and from caregiver to national leader.

Keig has earned multiple advanced degrees and co-founded the LGBTQ Caregiver Center. He also hosts The Umbrella Hour podcast and was named the National Association of Social Workers’ 2020 Social Worker of the Year. He was previously honored by MSU Denver as Alumnus of the Year in 2011 and Distinguished Alumnus in 2016.

In this episode, Keig reflects on the impact MSU Denver had on his personal and professional path, highlighting the university’s role in shaping his leadership and commitment to community. The conversation touches on mental fitness, inclusive caregiving, and the importance of navigating difference with empathy and curiosity.
