Our Department of Accounting faculty and staff sure know how to make the most of the summer!
Here’s a look at just some of what we’ve been up to:
This Summer 2024 term, we’re teaching 7 undergraduate courses and 4 graduate courses. In week 2 of the full summer term, Department Chair Dr. Greg Clifton hosted an MPAcc Social for our graduate students taking a summer course. It was great to catch up with some of our MPAcc students outside of class at the Tivoli Brewery!
In addition to teaching our Taxation for Decision Makers graduate course this summer, Assistant Professor and MPAcc alum Kristina Kesselring has earned her PhD – what a busy summer indeed! Congratulations Dr. Kesselring!
Jo Erven, Lecturer and Director of Internal Audit Education, has been busy leading various trainings and speaking engagements on personal development and ethics. In June she spoke in-person at the Alabama Association of College and University Business Officers (AACUBO) 2024 Conference (pictured). She is currently preparing to soon host and MC a CPE event called the Fraud Retreat here in Denver – we can’t wait!
It’s no secret that many accountants like to golf, and our department of accounting is no exception! We put together a department team for a fundraising event for MSU Denver’s Basketball teams. Our accounting team consisted of Greg Clifton (Department Chair), Joseph Cao (Academic Advisor), Shawn Tebben (our department’s Advisory Board Chair and Affiliate Faculty), and Jim Murphy (Senior Lecturer). What a perfect Colorado summer day for golfing!
Summer can be a great time to plan, present, and attend conferences. We had quite the roadrunner representation at The COCPA Educator’s Conference. Senior Lecturer and MPAcc alum Amy Cardillo helped plan the conference and create a panel session of recent graduates sharing about their educational experience. MSU Denver Combined Degree MPAcc alum Luis Paredes served as a panelist and caught up with 2 of his previous faculty, Senior Lecturer Jim Murphy and Lecturer Angela Busila who attended the conference as well (pictured).
Taking a break from work is a must to truly enjoy the summer! Amy Cardillo took a break from planning and presenting at conferences by spending a beautiful Colorado morning hiking to the top of the Manitou Incline with her family. What an awesome view!
This summer has been a season of travel, research, and receiving an award for Full Professor Dr. Minga Negash. After traveling to Johannesburg, South Africa for his annual visit of the Margo Steel School of Accountancy of the University of Witwatersand, he was able to collect the Southern African Accounting Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award which was awarded to him in June 2023. What an honor – congratulations!
In the midst of summer classes, golf, conferences, traveling, and research activities, we’ve also been meeting with our students for academic and career advising. With the July 29th final deadline extension to submit a complete Fall ’24 MPAcc application, we’ve also been busy talking with MPAcc applicants in 1-on-1 meetings and virtual events. It’s been a blast to better get to know our current students, connect with newly admitted students, and meet prospective future accounting roadrunners.
As we enjoy these last few weeks of summer, we’re prepping for the fall term and can’t wait to connect with our Accounting Roadrunner Community in upcoming engagement opportunities we’re planning inside and outside the classroom. Stay tuned!
