Ready to find out what MSU Denver can do for you? We’ve got you covered.
Dear Roadrunners,
I am pleased to share that Dr. Matt Makley has accepted the role of provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs at Metropolitan State University of Denver, effective May 1.
Dr. Makley has been a cornerstone of MSU Denver’s academic community for nearly two decades, serving as chair of the Department of History, former Faculty Senate president, and co-chair for the 2030 Strategic Plan development. A celebrated educator, scholar and campus leader, he is known for student-centered teaching, his deep respect for shared governance and his enduring commitment to academic excellence and workforce readiness.
As interim provost over the past four months, Dr. Makley brought steady, empathetic leadership during a pivotal time for the University. He worked in close partnership with faculty and staff to support strategic initiatives, enhance academic operations and guide critical conversations. His thoughtful and collaborative approach reflects his belief that meaningful change comes from empowering others and elevating diverse perspectives.
An accomplished historian, Dr. Makley has focused his scholarship on Indigenous North America; water history, particularly Colorado water; and the American West. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Arizona State University.
Dr. Makley says his top three priorities upon assuming the role are conscientious stewardship of families’ and taxpayers’ investments in MSU Denver; improving retention and graduation rates; and continuing to cultivate a culture of shared responsibility, mutual respect and healthy professional relationships across units at the University.
I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to the hiring committee and to everyone who participated in the expedited hiring process and shared feedback. Dr. Makley’s credentials and institutional fit made him a clear choice. I am confident that under his guidance, our academic mission will thrive and our faculty, staff and students will be well-positioned to meet the challenges — and opportunities — that lie ahead.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Makley.
Sincerely,
Janine Davidson, Ph.D.
President
