The Metropolitan State University of Denver Veteran and Military Student Services Boots to Suits program received a financial boost thanks to the generosity of alumnus Shane Portfolio, Ph.D.

The $20,000 gift will support student veterans, providing access to the resources needed to achieve their educational and professional goals.

“What matters to me is positively affecting others and paying it forward,” said Portfolio, Chief Technology Officer of Congruex, a multi-national organization specializing in broadband network construction and engineering.

A loyal donor and Foundation Board member, Portfolio is a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Army, where he was a platoon sergeant recognized as a Top Gun for Colorado and served as a leadership instructor for Combat Arms Units.

Upon deciding to transition back to civilian life, Portfolio returned to Colorado, where he met a group of students who encouraged him to enroll at MSU Denver.

“I went to our [the University’s] VA office, and they did an incredible job,” said the first-generation student and 2000 Computer Information Systems graduate. “They made sure my transition was as seamless as possible, and they welcomed me.”

MSU Denver was recognized as a 2023 Best for Vets university by Military Times and has been a long-time top choice for veterans and military students because of the support programs like Boots to Suits.

Boots to Suits is part of a unique partnership with the University of Colorado Denver. Services include a professional development program and academic support services that assist veterans as they transition from the military to the classroom and from the classroom to the workforce. Resources include peer-to-peer mentoring, individual professional development counseling and mentorship, mental wellness support, tutoring assistance and scholarships.

“When I returned to MSU Denver to complete my degree, getting involved with Veteran and Military Student Services reconnected me with the understanding that everyone is here to help and grow the world to a new level.”

The one-year cohort program is an opportunity for current student veterans to enhance their marketing, networking, resume-writing, interviewing and other skills to land their dream job. Graduates who successfully complete all requirements receive a new professional outfit for job searches and interviews.

Donors like Portfolio and industry partners enable Boots to Suits to offer student veterans a world-class experience, priming them to become changemakers in the classroom, their careers and their communities.

“As Roadrunners, we can continue to make an impact on society and be a true representation of our amazing University,” said Portfolio.
