Advising Students on ESSJ

The Ethnic Studies & Social Justice (ESSJ) requirement replaced the Multicultural (MC) requirement for students on the 2023-2024 catalog and onward.  The course lists for both are the same!  Please always use the most recent course list, as courses are tagged with the attribute at the time the time the course is taken.

Proposing or Redesignating an ESSJ Course

The old Multicultural (MC) graduation requirement was replaced by the Ethnic Studies & Social Justice (ESSJ) graduation requirement on the 2023-2024 catalog. The requirement was modernized with a new name, description, and student learning outcomes. Beginning in the fall 2023 semester, courses on the previous Multicultural list were copied to the Ethnic Studies & Social Justice (ESSJ) list.  This began a cycle of redesignation for all courses under the new ESSJ description and learning outcomes.

Due to the volume of courses, the redesignation process is stretched over a three-year period.  Faculty who teach these ESSJ courses and would like to maintain ESSJ designation must apply during their cycle on the September curriculum deadline and show how they fulfill the new requirement in their course.  Departments should choose a faculty lead to submit the proposal.  The proposal will be reviewed by the The Faculty Senate ESSJ Curriculum Review Committee for fit to the new requirement.  If approved, the course will stay on the ESSJ course list.  If denied, the course will be removed from the ESSJ course list for the following fall semester.

The Faculty Senate ESSJ Curriculum Review Committee also accepts proposals for new ESSJ courses each September.

Faculty are encouraged to work with the chair of the Faculty Senate ESSJ Curriculum Review Committee during the proposal writing process.

Further instructions and the redesignation timeline for all courses is listed on the Curriculum Sharepoint.
