This spring semester, I will be on a Fulbright – U.S. Scholar Program, where I will be working with faculty in the College of Business & Management at VinUniversity in Hanoi, Vietnam to advance their hospitality management program. VinUniveristy is a new university that was established by Vingroup, the largest conglomerate in Vietnam and has business operations in communication, real estate, and hospitality. The University has strategic collaborations with Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania and is already emerging as a world leader in higher education in Vietnam through its emphasis on collaboration between industry and higher education.
The Fulbright Scholar Program is part of The United States Cultural Exchange Program which was started after WWII to promote cultural awareness and diplomacy throughout 160 countries around the world. As noted by Fulbright, “unity among our allies, partners, and friends around the world is essential to security and stability.” Selected recipients of the program receive a scholarship to work with an institution or organization abroad and may conduct research, teach, engage in a cultural arts activity, or work with others on a specified project in industry. To many, it is considered a prestigious scholarship. In addition to sending citizens abroad, the program also brings international students and faculty to the United States.
For the School of Hospitality, it is my goal to build an education partnership between VinUniveristy and MSU Denver, specifically for the School of Hospitality. In the future, we hope to provide student and faculty/staff exchanges between the School of Hospitality and the hospitality management program in the College of Business and Management at VinUniversity, engage in collaborative research and other projects, and create teaching collaborations among our academic programs. As Denver emerges as a global destination, the time is right for us to continue our discussion of how we prepare our students for a global, tourism economy. For our industry partners, I hope to create a platform of best practices for hospitality operators in Vietnam and Denver.
Through this blog, I aim to have a conversation about academic leadership in higher education and hospitality/tourism in Vietnam. I hope to engage in some meaningful conversations with academic leaders at VinUniversity and hospitality leaders in Hanoi. I also aim to have a conversation about the growing tourism industry in Vietnam, and the challenges (and triumphs!) that the industry is facing.
