The Department of Accounting housed in MSU Denver’s College of Business is proud to announce the establishment of a brand-new Risk Assurance and Advisory Center. This curriculum has actually been a present in the Department of Accounting since 2010 as part of a graduate course where students serve as the internal auditors for MSU Denver. This updated version of the center will serve as a resource for students within the current Risk Assurance and Advisory Program by creating more of a community atmosphere for them to indulge in. The purpose behind this initiative is to further aid students in developing their knowledge, skills, and abilities that will in turn increase their opportunities to successfully obtain, and advance in, positions under the broad term of internal auditing.

The Internal Audit Program at MSU Denver is proud to be a part of the IIA’s Internal Audit Academic Alliance. MSU Denver is a Comprehensive level program, offering three internal audit courses. There are only 13 higher education institutions in the United States at the Center of Excellence level (above MSU Denver), and only 23 others at the same Comprehensive level. MSU Denver is the only University in Colorado with this recognition! This is a very high achievement that sets our college apart, celebrates students and faculty’s hard work, as well as promotes our academic drive and power to everyone. This center facilitates roles that include but are not limited to internal auditing, operational auditing, sustainability auditing, quality assurance auditing, etc.

The variety of these areas signifies that this center caters to all College of Business students, not only to Accounting majors, and can help them elevate their careers and connect them with their respective industry professionals and recruiters too. The Risk Assurance & Advisory Center will be headed by a director, Amanda “Jo” Erven, Lecturer and Director of Internal Audit Education at MSU Denver.

It also will be managed by the following board members:

Our new center not only offers a sense of community and belonging to students but also serves as a great resource for the community coordinating and offering CPE training for industry professionals as well as faculty members. This includes training in topics like ethics, fraud, auditing, IT and more. This program will also offer capstone project courses, internship and job opportunities, paid audit experience programs, and hand-on labs and mock audits.

We are very honored and proud to launch such an influential program that addresses the talent gap in Colorado’s risk, audit, and advisory sectors, provides underrepresented and first-gen students with incredible career advancements, and bridges the gap between academia and industry.
