Organizational Changes Within ITS

ITS is pleased to announce that on July 3, 2017, Kevin Taylor was officially named MSU Denver's Chief Information Officer and Associate Vice President for Information Technology Services. Previously serving as both Interim CIO/AVP of ITS and Director of Application Services, Kevin originally joined ITS in October 2014 as Associate Director of Application Services. Prior to MSU Denver, Kevin served as the Director of Information Technology and CIO at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

We are also sad to announce two major organizational changes within the ITS Education Technology Center. First, Michael Erskine, who has served as the Director for the past three years, left MSU Denver to become a full-time faculty member at Middle Tennessee State University. Michael is an alumnus of MSU Denver and has worked for the University since 2004 in various roles and on a myriad of committees. To name just a few of his contributions, Michael was instrumental in the migration of all academic websites to standardized templates, the development of effective shared governance, the migration of all online courses to a new Learning Management System, and the implementation of national quality standards for online education.

Additionally, Manisha Pinge, who has served the University for the past 13 years as an Instructional Designer, and most recently as Associate Director of the ITS Educational Technology Center, left the University to return to her home in India. Manisha has been an incredible resource for faculty and was instrumental in designing and building MSU Denver's contemporary online learning environment. Manisha’s dedication to providing the highest quality experience for our students is extremely commendable.

We welcome Kevin as our new CIO and wish Michael and Manisha the best in their future endeavors!

Telephony Initiative Update

After successfully deploying the new telephone system to ITS and the departments moving into the new AES building (Wave 0), the ITS Telephony Implementation Team will begin deployment efforts in the Central Classroom, West Classroom, Plaza, and Arts buildings (Wave 1). The administrative support staff in each of these buildings will be contacted within the coming weeks to ensure that the telephone deployment in their respective departments goes as smoothly as possible. If you are an administrative support staff member in one of these buildings and have not been contacted by ITS yet, please contact the Telephony Team at and we will make sure someone reaches out to you.

New Security Policies

The ITS Security Policies have been entirely rewritten to make them more applicable, comprehensive and understandable. The President’s Cabinet recently approved a draft version of the policies with minor suggested changes. After the changes have been made, the final version of policies will be available in the University Policy Library.

The ‘MSUDenver’ Wireless Network

The name of the ‘MetroState’ wireless network was recently changed to ‘MSUDenver’ to align with MSU Denver’s branding standards. The change will require you to connect your devices to the ‘MSUDenver’ wireless network in order to use it. In all MSU Denver buildings, both names for the network (‘MetroState’ and ‘MSUDenver’) will simultaneously display in the list of available networks for you to choose from until July 28, 2017.

Learning Spaces Team Receives Industry-Standard Certification

Four members of the ITS Learning Spaces Team recently received InfoComm International’s Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) certification, which is the definitive professional certification for the audiovisual (AV) industry. As AV becomes increasingly integrated with teaching and learning, it’s important that our Learning Spaces Team be knowledgeable about industry standards and best practices, allowing them to select and support the ideal AV solutions for MSU Denver’s learning spaces. We would like to congratulate Craig Myers, Jordan Price, David Sharman, and Nick Webb for earning this prestigious certification and acknowledge their continual commitment to excellence.

Scheduled Closure

The ITS walk-up service locations (AD475 and WC243) and learning spaces support will be unavailable on Friday, July 21, while team members participate in a group service project. However, the ITS Hotline at 303-352-7548 will remain in service, so feel free to call with your technology-related questions.

Think You’ve Been Hacked? Here’s How to Shake It Off!

Face it: Hackers Gonna Hack. How to know if you’ve been hacked?

  • Your friends tell you. They’ve received a spammy or phishy e-mail from your account.
  • Your phone tells you. Collection companies are calling about nonpayment. Battery and data usage are higher than normal. Charges for premium SMS numbers show up on your bill.
  • Your browser tells you. Unwanted browser toolbars, homepages, or plugins appear unexpectedly. You’re seeing lots of pop-ups or web page redirects. Your online passwords aren’t working.
  • Your software tells you. New accounts appear on your device. Antivirus messages report that the virus hasn’t been cleaned or quarantined. You see fake antivirus messages from software you don’t remember installing. Programs are running or requesting elevated privileges that you did not install. Programs randomly crash.
  • Your bank tells you. You receive a message about insufficient funds due to unauthorized charges.
  • Your mail tells you. You receive a notification from a company that has recently suffered a cybersecurity breach.

Shake it off. Following are the steps you can take to recover.

  1. Change your affected passwords using an unaffected device. Not sure which passwords are affected? It’s best to change them all.
  2. Update your mobile software and apps. Make sure you keep them up-to-date.
  3. Update your antivirus software. Then run a complete scan. Follow the instructions provided to quarantine or delete any infected files.
  4. Update your browser software and plugins. Check frequently for new updates and delete any unnecessary or obsolete plugins.
  5. Is your computer still acting wonky? It might be best to start from scratch with a complete reformat of your machine so you can ensure that all affected software is fixed.
  6. Self-report to credit agencies. If you believe your personally identifiable information has been affected, you don’t want to deal with identity theft on top of being hacked.
  7. Be prepared with backups. Don’t let the next compromise ruin your day. Backup your files frequently. Consider storing at least two separate backups: one on an external drive and one in cloud storage.
  8. Stay ahead of the hackers. Check the Have I been pwned website to see if your accounts were hacked in a known attack.
