Second Annual Summer Soiree 2017

Second Annual Summer Soirée 2017

Dear Friend:

Metropolitan State University of Denver is excited to announce its 2nd annual Summer Soiree on Saturday, June 10, 2017, on the front lawn of the Student Success Building at the Auraria Campus.

This year’s event will celebrate President Stephen M. Jordan and his wife Ruthie and their 12-year legacy of leadership, access and innovation at the University. Since taking the helm in 2005, Jordan has put MSU Denver on the path to becoming the preeminent public urban university in the nation. Under his leadership, the institution has achieved university status, launched its first master’s degree programs, established a School of Education, and seen plans for a Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center, Student Success Building and Athletic Complex come to fruition.

A key priority of Jordan’s tenure has been transforming the lives of underrepresented MSU Denver students. The current student population is comprised of 40 percent students of color, up 21 percent since his arrival. Among those transformed by his progressive vision were undocumented students; Jordan’s courageous leadership in creating a nonresident tuition rate evened the playing field for Colorado’s undocumented students and heralded the ultimate passage of the ASSET bill.

Proceeds from the Summer Soiree will be dedicated to a scholarship fund in Steve and Ruthie’s name that will provide educational access and support to students at MSU Denver. Of our approximately 20,000 students, the majority are considered low- or moderate-income and of those 92 percent receive financial aid. These are students who work full- or part-time jobs, have families to support and have overcome many obstacles to attend college.

We anticipate about 600 business and community leaders (including alums, faculty and students) joining us for this event, reflecting a diverse tapestry of ages, backgrounds, cultures and races. Students will be a key part of the program: Hospitality majors will assist in the food preparation and service, and music students will provide entertainment along with local artists. A unique feature will be the availability of pedicabs to take guests around the campus to see the growth and expansion that has occurred during Jordan’s tenure.

MSU Denver recognizes you as a crucial stakeholder in its community and appreciates your support of its mission. As such, the University invites you to serve as a sponsor for this event to further honor Steve and Ruthie’s legacy. Select students will be invited to join the sponsored tables and share their life stories and educational journeys with you. It will be a memorable evening!
