Raquel grew up in a city known for its warm weather and abundant vegetation. The state of Morelos, México, is home to her family and one of the leading figures in the Mexican Revolution, Emiliano Zapata. When she thinks of what it means to be Mexicana; her heart and soul lead to family, joy, resilience, and delicious food. When she was 12 years old, her parents and two older siblings came to the United States in search of better opportunities. Once she arrived to the U.S., she learned English, integrated into a new culture, and found courage to embrace her Mexican identity in academic spaces. Raquel studied in Mexico 8th – 10th grade and returned to the U.S. her junior year. Her parents believed in education and social justice as pathways to help others. Therefore, she knew she wanted to find a career that would enhance human well-being, promote social justice, and empower communities.

Raquel is a proud CAMP and MSU Denver alumna! She earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work. She feels honored to support students in their academic journey and is continuously inspired by their stories and resilience. Her hope is to help CAMP scholars discover they are the main ingredient for change, and that real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love. During Raquel’s free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, working in her garden, and exploring new places to run and hike in Colorado.
