Child Welfare Stipend Application

The Child Welfare Stipend Program includes a competitive application and interview process, as a limited number of stipends are available each year.

Child welfare stipends are available to students in both the full- and part-time BSSW and MSW programs, including those completing their degrees online and MSW advanced standing students.

Application & Interview Process

BSSW or MSW students must have applied to MSU Denver social work program to submit an application for the child welfare stipend. Students must be accepted into the program to interview for and receive a stipend.

BSSW students can apply for a stipend during their junior year, to receive a stipend for their senior year.

MSW program applicants can apply to receive a stipend for their foundation year (Regular Program) or concentration year (Advanced Standing Program).

MSW foundation year students can apply to receive a stipend for their concentration year.

MSW Advanced Standing students can apply to receive a stipend for the duration of their program.


  1. Watch the Colorado Child Welfare Realistic Job Preview video.
  2. Follow the application instructions below to submit your application and all required documents and forms.
  3. Your application will be reviewed by MSW Denver child welfare stipend program staff.
  4. If you are selected to move forward, you will be contacted via the e-mail provided with your application to schedule an interview.
    1. You will be interviewed by a panel consisting of representatives from:
      1. MSU Denver Department of Social Work
      2. Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS)
      3. Colorado County Departments of Human/Social Services
  5. The panel will make their final decision based on the availability of funds and the pool of applicants.
  6. You will be contacted by MSU Denver child welfare stipend program staff with the interview panel's decision within a month of your interview.

Application Instructions:

  1. Apply to the applicable MSU social work program (BSSW or MSW). New MSU Denver students: You DO NOT have to have been accepted into the social work program to apply for the child welfare stipend. You will need to be accepted into the program to interview and receive a stipend.
  2. Complete the online application, essay questions and submit all required documents with your application.
    1. Required documents (all documents listed below will be submitted electronically with your application*):
      1. Cover Letter (one page): Should include a brief statement of the reason for your interested in the stipend program, a brief summary of the experiences and strengths you would bring to child welfare, and a brief statement of anything special you would like the committee to consider.
      2. Resume (one to two pages): Should include educational and work/volunteer experience(s).
      3. Letter(s) of Reference*: Letters can be submitted along with the application or directly from the reference to the child welfare stipend coordinator. See details included in the form.
        • First time stipend applicant (BSSW or MSW): Two letters of reference are required and should come from someone who is acquainted with your writing skills, personal qualities and your professional goals. If applicable, they should also be knowledgeable about child welfare.
        • Second year stipend applicants (MSW): One reference letter is required and should come from your current field instructor or internship coordinator.
        • County employees: One letter of recommendation MUST be from your current child welfare supervisor.
  3. Provide a signature and date at the end of the electronic application.
  4. Click “Submit” and a confirmation window will confirm your submission and provide additional information.

We highly encourage you to view the application questions (available below) in advance and prepare your essay questions in a Word document to check for spelling and word count before pasting your responses into the online application.
