BSSW Program Application Process
The application cycle for the Fall 2019 start will run from February 4, 2019 through April 5, 2019. Late materials will be accepted, please contact The Office of Social Work Student Services at firstname.lastname@example.org if you need an extension.
All students who wish to apply for the BSSW Program beginning in Fall 2019 must complete and submit the application below. All application materials must be submitted at the same time. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all items are complete. Complete packets are necessary for consideration into the program. Incomplete applications will not be able to be submitted. The application will be submitted online. Please email email@example.com if you have any questions about the application process.
NEW THIS YEAR: Students will not be able to register for Fall 2019 upper division social work courses until their application has been processed and their major changed to social work (SWK). Applications are processed and reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received, so we highly encourage you to submit your application as soon as you are able so that it can be processed and your major changed prior to the start of fall registration in late March/early April.

A completed application includes the following elements:
- Completed application packet, including all the pages within the online application
- Admissions Essay (please see below for instructions)
Admissions Essay Instructions
Please include your full name and MSU Denver Student ID (900#) on all pages of your essay. The essay should be typed, double-spaced, and approximately 2-3 pages in length. Your essay should comply with academic standards in writing as strong writing skills are needed in order to be successful in the Department of Social Work. If during the application review it is determined that you may require additional writing support to be successful, you will be required to complete additional requirements after being admitted. Please save your essay in either PDF (preferred) or Microsoft Word format prior to upload.
The Admissions Essay should address the following:
- The reason for selecting the social work major and field (as opposed to another helping profession) (include any relevant work, volunteer, or life experience)
- Long-term academic and career goals (does not have to be specific)
- How you will manage the rigorous demands of the BSSW Program
If you need assistance with your essay, we recommend reaching out to the Writing Center. The Writing Center offers help at any stage of a writing project, from finding a topic to organizing the content to producing a final draft. They will work with writers in all areas of study, at all levels, in all stages of their writing processes, and with all types of writing projects. The Writing Center main office is located in the King Center, room 415. The Writing Center will offer appointments within the Social Work Department (Central Classroom Building) on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Course Delivery Information
Fully online delivery means that you will be taking your courses in an online format which will include both synchronous and asynchronous activities. Asynchronous activities are activities, readings, assignments, videos, and other tasks required in your course that you do on your own time while meeting the expected due dates and times. Synchronous activities are activities that occur with others at a scheduled time but that are accessible to you online. This means that you will use meeting software such as Zoom, Skype, Google Hangout, and/or other platforms to communicate and meet with your class and instructor at a specified time. Synchronous activities may be meeting with your whole class and the instructor, meeting individually with your instructor, meeting with a group of students, or meeting with one other student in order to complete required course expectations. Synchronous learning in online education has been demonstrated to increase student outcomes, sense of community, and overall student satisfaction with online learning. Hybrid delivery means that you will have a combination of face to face and online class sessions in the same course. This schedule is specific to your course so make sure you are aware of the dates that require face to face or synchronous online learning. When you are in a hybrid course, please see course notes to check the requirements for your hybrid course.
Whether fully online or hybrid, online learning requires you as a student to effectively manage your time, plan ahead, communicate openly and timely, present yourself professionally, and to fully understand the expectations of your course. You need to be assertive and communicate immediately with your instructor when you have questions or need clarification in assignments. Online and hybrid course delivery options require you to be active in Blackboard multiple times a week (e.g., discussion boards, presentations, assignments, peer interactions, course material, etc.), to read all emails and announcements (as they are not reinforced in face to face class), and complete all required material in the weekly modules.
Though you don't have a physical class, you still need to schedule time for yourself to complete course assignments and learning time, not just course reading. Online does not mean less time or less rigorous. You should schedule the equivalent time of a face to face class (approx. 3 hours) each week in order to learn the course material through participation in discussion and completion of your learning modules in addition to reading, homework, and assignment time required for "out of class" time.
