July 10 budget update

Email from President Davidson

July 10, 2020

Dear MSU Denver community,

During the past four months, you have demonstrated your commitment to Metropolitan State University of Denver, our mission and the students we serve. Thank you for your hard work under these incredibly challenging circumstances.

As a follow-up to my July 1 message to the campus community, MSU Denver has been looking at ways to address the $14 million shortfall we are facing for the 2020-21 fiscal year. We have implemented efficiency savings from every area of the University through reduced operating budgets and voluntary early-separation agreements and furloughs, which included a 10% pay reduction through furloughs for myself, the vice presidents, general counsel and academic deans beginning July 1. These efforts have brought us to over $10 million in savings.

Despite the University’s best attempts, these financial challenges are too great to overcome without eliminating some positions from different areas across the institution, and today we notified 10 employees that their positions had been eliminated. These layoffs are no reflection on the employees’ contributions to MSU Denver. They will be eligible for unemployment, and we are providing severance packages to ease their transition. Out of respect for each person’s privacy, we will not specifically identify those who have been impacted.

This was a very difficult decision for MSU Denver, which prides itself on being a people-centered organization, with more than 70% of the institution’s budget directly supporting employees. But these decisions are necessary if we are to meet our financial obligations and remain focused on our mission. At this time, the University does not anticipate any additional layoffs.

I know MSU Denver will continue to be innovative and resourceful, finding new ways and approaches to meet these unprecedented challenges. We will continue to demonstrate the Roadrunner tenets of adaptability, tenacity and strength and show the greater community what we can do. Thank you for your continued support, patience and kindness to one another. You inspire me daily.

Janine Davidson, Ph.D.
