Gerontology Track

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT MAJOR: GERONTOLOGY CONCENTRATION (HDV3). Students in the Gerontology Concentration will complete 42-43 credit hours (Please note: Students who select the gerontology concentration may NOT have a gerontology minor):

PART I. TAKE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING COURSES:

  1. PSY 1001 – Introductory Psychology.
    • Both semesters of General or Introductory Psychology must be taken in transfer for equivalence. Only 3 hours of Introductory Psychology count toward the major.
  2. SOC 1010 – Introduction to Psychology.
  3. SOC 1040 – Introduction to Social Gerontology.
  4. PSY 2270 or SOC 3100 – Death and Dying.
  5. NUT 2040 – Introduction to Nutrition.
  6. RECR 2330 – Advocacy, Leisure, and the Aging Adult.
  7. PSY 3270 – Adulthood and Aging.
  8. NUT 3100 – Nutrition and Aging OR SOC 3040 – Contemporary Issues in Social Gerontology OR SWK 3030 – Social Work with the Aging (4 credits).
  9. BIO 3530/HES 3810 – Physiology of Aging for Non-Biology Majors.
  10. PSY 3340 – Cognitive Development and Learning.
  11. PSY 3350 – Psychology of Social Development.
  12. PSY 2330 – Statistics and Research Methods for the Social and Behavioral Science.
    • PSY 2330, PSY 3280, & PSY 4960 must be taken in sequence, one at a time (three semesters total).
  13. PSY 3280 – Developmental Research Methods.
    • PSY 2330, PSY 3280, & PSY 4960 must be taken in sequence, one at a time (three semesters total).
  14. PSY 4960 – Senior Thesis in Human Development.
    • PSY 4960 meets university senior experience requirement.
    • PSY 2330, PSY 3280, & PSY 4960 must be taken in sequence, one at a time (three semesters total).

BIG PICTURE:(WHAT YOU NEED TO GRADUATE!):

  • 42-43 credits in the Human Development Major (see above)
  • 33 credits in General Studies (see course catalog or advisor for distribution of courses needed)
  • 19-24 credits in the Minor (credit numbers vary depending on minor)
  • 21-26 credits of Electives (credits vary depending on how many credits are required for the minor)

120 Total Credits (Additional requirements: Minimum of 15 hours taken at Metropolitan State University of Denver and last 12 hours must be in residence at Metropolitan State University of Denver)
