About This Program

The dangers of substance abuse are delivering serious blows to American society. Tens of thousands of people are dying from overdoses every year and the death toll continues to rise. The opioid epidemic has brought our nation’s addiction crisis to the forefront of the public eye, highlighting the dire need of addiction counselors and mental health professionals to treat the core of the problem.

If you’re up for the challenge of fighting one of the most taxing problems of our generation, MSU Denver is one of the best places to start.

The Master of Science in Clinical Behavioral Health with a concentration in Addiction Counseling integrates research, skill development, education in treatment and recovery, evidence-based practices and field work to prepare you for a career in the treatment of substance abuse and addictive behavior disorders in a variety of settings. You will qualify to sit for the examination for Master Addictions Counselors to earn your License in Addictions Counseling. With one additional internship you may also qualify to complete the examination for your Licensed Professional Counselor.

Benefits of Earning Your Degree at MSU Denver

  • The Masters of Science in Clinical Behavioral Health, emphasis in Addictions Counseling offers the opportunity for dual licensure. Students earn their Licensed Addictions Counselor — and with additional internship — their Licensed Professional Counselor. This dual pathway provides future clinicians the skills to serve clients who are struggling with both mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Graduate degrees offer greater advancement opportunities, earning potential, and supervisory experience.
  • Our program offers convenient hybrid classes, as well as evening and weekend offerings; balance work and graduate school by combining in class experience with online learning.

Career Opportunities for Our Graduates

Mental health and substance abuse issues are a pressing issue both nationally and locally. Each day, 130 Americans die due to opioid use. There is a real need in Colorado for addictions and mental health clinicians as well, with 3 in 10 Coloradans struggling with a mental health or substance abuse issue.

Additionally, job growth in behavioral health is expected to rise over 40% between 2015-2025.
