MSU Denver Password Reset Program

MSU Denver’s password reset process has been updated as part of a concerted effort to enhance the University’s security profile by leveraging the advanced security features of Office 365. On July 26, 2018, the former Password Reset Program was phased out and a quicker, easier, more secure Office 365 solution was implemented.

The step-by-step instructions below describe the process for resetting your password through Office 365, as well as signing up for the Office 365 account recovery system and using it to reset your password.

Resetting your password through Office 365

Note: These instructions require that you have a current, working password. If you do not have a working password, but have already signed up for the Office 365 account recovery system, please skip ahead to the Recovering your account section.

1. Log in to your MSU Denver Office 365 account.

2. Click the circular icon in the upper-right corner (it may show a silhouette, your initials, or a picture you have selected). Select the "My account" link.

3. On the next screen, select the "Manage security & privacy" link.

5. You will be presented a screen that will ask for your current password, then let you enter a new password. When done, make sure you click the Submit button. Make sure your password meets the minimum complexity requirements:

Your password must contain

  • ten or more characters
  • a number or symbol (ex. !@#$%^)
  • upper and lower case characters

Your password must not

  • be the same as your last ten passwords
  • be similar to your first name, last name, or NetID (if any three characters appear in the same order, it will be rejected)

Signing up for Office 365 account recovery

The first time you access Office 365 using a Web browser, you will automatically be prompted to sign up for the new Office 365 account recovery system. You can also re-configure these settings at any time by directly accessing the sign-up page. (Skip to step 3 if you use this link).

1. Select the "Email (Office 365)" link available on either the Student Hub or the Faculty & Staff Hub.

2. After clicking the "Email (Office 365)" link, the following screen will display. Click the Next button to begin the process.

3. The Office 365 account recovery system allows you to use either your phone or email to verify your account. Select the authentication method you prefer. (Please note that you will need to select at least one method.)

4. If you select the Authentication Phone option in Step 3 above, you will see the following screen. Enter your phone number and click either the text me or call me button depending on how you prefer to receive the verification code – via a text message or a phone call.

5. If you selected the call me option, you should see the following screen and receive a phone call with your verification code. Enter the code in the verification code text box and click the verify button.

6. If you selected the text me option, you should see the following screen and receive a text message with your verification code. Enter the code in the verification code text box and click the verify button.

7. If you selected the Email authentication method in Step 3 above, the following dialog box will display. Enter your alternative (non-MSU Denver) email address and click the email me button to continue.

8. You should receive a verification code via the email address you entered. Enter the code in the verification code field and click the verify button.
