Who They Are: Through various Community Table programs we strive to improve the quality of life for hungry families and children in our community. It is through unwavering support of the community that they have been able to provide food to those in need for more than three decades – a legacy which Community Table strives to continue. At Community Table, putting food on the table is only the beginning. Now with expanded services to encourage self-sufficiency, Community Table’s Bridges to Opportunity program supports clients through education and linkage with the rich community resources available to them. Their generous and hardworking volunteers, supporters, Board of Directors, and staff take pride in being an essential strand in the fabric of our community.
Who They Are: They increase health equity with Denver neighborhoods by rescuing high-quality, fresh produce and perishable foods that would otherwise be thrown away by grocery stores, farmers markets, and produce distributors. With the help of their amazing volunteers, the food we rescue is delivered (often biked!) to Denver neighborhoods for direct distribution at No Cost Grocery Programs (NCGPs). NCGPs are co-created with existing community organizations like schools, recreation centers, and nonprofits that are already established and trusted within the neighborhood, decreasing transportation barriers. Residents of the NCGP community lead the distribution of rescued food, and many also help with food rescue shifts. This participation decreases stigma of traditional food pantries, empowering each neighborhood to create a program that is appropriate for their culture & community.
Who They Are: They help families thrive by efficiently procuring and distributing food and essentials to the hungry through our programs and partner agencies.
Who They Are: Today, Food for Thought Denver remains a 100% volunteer organization which strives to eliminate weekend hunger — servicing 53 schools in the Denver area. While most of our food recipients qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs during the school week, many of these kids do not have enough to eat on the weekends. As a result, we have set forth on one simple mission: fill this weekend hunger gap.
Each Friday, individuals, students, and corporate volunteers gather to fill PowerSacks. Each bag contains enough non-perishable food items to feed a family of four for the weekend. The bags are then distributed to the students on Friday afternoons to take home to their families. Our vision is to ultimately live in a community where weekend hunger is no longer a roadblock in a child’s path to success.
The GrowHaus is a nonprofit indoor farm, marketplace and educational center in Denver’s Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. Their vision is a world where all communities have the means to nourish themselves, and their mission is to create a community-driven, neighborhood-based food system by serving as a hub for food distribution, production, education, and economic opportunity.
Hunger Free Colorado, a statewide nonprofit organization launched in 2009, connects families and individuals to food resources and fuels change in systems, policies and social views, so no Coloradan goes hungry. By leveraging the power of collaboration, innovation and partnership, they eliminate barriers to the access of affordable, nutritious food, so all Coloradans can thrive and reach their full potential.
Who They Are: At Metro Caring, we’re meeting people’s immediate food needs while addressing the root cause of hunger: poverty. We provide nutritious groceries to our neighbors, and also offer comprehensive anti-hunger resources so that families can break the cycle of poverty. Our Fresh Foods market is at the heart of Metro Caring. Shoppers choose from an array of nutritious foods based on their dietary needs and preferences, and leave with a week’s supply of groceries, including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and lean protein.
Project Angel Heart was founded in 1991 to address a major challenge for Coloradans who are ill: getting the nutrition they need to get stronger, heal, and remain at home. Many are too sick to get to the grocery store or unable to cook for themselves. Others find they have to choose whether to buy food or medication to make ends meet. That’s why Project Angel Heart prepares and delivers medically tailored meals to people living with life-threatening illnesses. Each week, our professional chefs and registered dietitian prepare thousands of delicious meals, from scratch, and tailor them to meet the medical and dietary needs of those who are ill. Project Angel Heart improves health and well-being for people with life-threatening illnesses by preparing and delivering medically tailored meals and promoting the power of food as medicine.
SAME Café is a donation-based, fair exchange restaurant that serves healthy food to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Our mission is to create community through healthy food access. We believe in healthy food, community, and dignity for everyone. SAME Café is the first nonprofit restaurant in Denver! Everyone who comes through the door is treated exactly the same. Guests order from the healthy menu of mostly local, organic food and then let us know how they would like to participate in the community in exchange for the meal: volunteering time, giving produce, or donating money.
The Sun Valley Kitchen & Community Center is a safe and supportive space to explore life’s possibilities. The Center provides children and families in Sun Valley with opportunities for self-expression, self-awareness and personal growth, while fostering unity within the dynamic, multi-cultural neighborhood.
We Don’t Waste was founded in 2009 in an effort to address these important issues. Today, we are one of the largest food recovery organizations in Colorado. They focus on perishable items including fresh produce, lean proteins and dairy products. We supplement food provided by food assistance programs with fresh food reclaimed from our food donors. This allows our recipient organizations to consistently serve the hungry with healthy and wholesome meals without increasing their operating costs.
