The MSU Denver Dietetic Internship is a 42-week program which starts in late July/early August and runs through mid/late May. The program provides more than the required minimum of 1200 hours of supervised practice experiences (rotations) at different organizations throughout the Denver-metropolitan area. Students enrolled in the Dietetic Internship program have the option of completing the Master of Science in Nutrition at Dietetics (MSND) at MSU Denver, but are not required to enroll in the MSND program.
The following rotations are included in the MSU Denver Dietetic Internship:
The Metropolitan State University of Denver Internship Program has been selected by the Diversity and Inclusion Committee as the recipient of the Academy’s 2021 D&I Action Award. Becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist requires the following: a bachelor’s degree, completion of an ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics, completion of an ACEND-accredited supervised practice experience, and passing a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. The MSU Denver Dietetic Internship meets the supervised practice experience required to take the Commission on Dietetics Registration’s Registration Examination for Dietitian Nutritionists. The MSU Denver Dietetic Internship meets the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics’ (ACEND) Accreditation Standards, including core competencies for the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, and provides a concentration in Urban Nutrition.
If you plan to become an RDN without obtaining a master’s degree, please see an advisor. Spring match of 2022 may be the last time undergraduate students can become RDNs without also obtaining a master’s degree.
Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master’s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In order to be approved for registration examination eligibility with a bachelor’s degree, an individual must meet all eligibility requirements and be submitted into CDR’s Registration Eligibility Processing System (REPS) before 12:00 midnight Central Time, December 31, 2023. For more information about this requirement visit CDR’s website: https://www.cdrnet.org/graduatedegree. In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship program at MSU Denver are eligible to apply to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.
In most states, graduates also must obtain licensure or certification to practice. It is ACEND’s considered opinion that the program is designed to and does meet all state dietetics licensure and certification laws. Colorado does not require licensure. For more information about state licensure requirements click here.
