MSU Denver

Solution Studio

2022 Colorado candidates for Governor and U.S. Senate are invited to engage with MSU Denver students on solving some of the biggest problems facing our state and nation. More than any other Colorado institution of higher education, MSU Denver students represent the next generation of Colorado’s workforce, changemakers, public servants, and leaders.

Background and Context

Over the past several years, Americans have seen our foundational beliefs and constitutional support for free and fair elections put at risk. While this did not happen overnight, it may be linked to incremental shifts in media coverage of legislative policy, executive action & elections through an entertainment lens.

Format

MSU Denver Institute for Public Service, CLLARO and New Voice Strategies have taken the lead in creating this new format designed to engage and inspire the voters and leaders of tomorrow. The format will provide the 2022 Gubernatorial and U.S. Senate Campaigns with an opportunity to focus on proposed solutions, in a manner viewers find informative and engaging.

The Solution Studio borrows from the familiar genre of talent-show TV (e.g. The Voice, American Idol, or America’s Got Talent) that young Coloradans have grown up with. The candidates are invited to “audition” – one at a time – on the strength of their solutions to issues most important to students and young Coloradans, not on the cleverness of their soundbites, before a panel of four students. This is an opportunity for dialogue between a single candidate and real students facing real challenges in 2022 – away from the debate stage, political rally platform, and their opponents. You, the voter, will be able to watch these sessions in their entirety or in segments on various media outlets the week of October 17. You can then decide, for yourself, which candidates can explain what it takes to solve intractable or complicated problems.

Stay Tuned!

MSU Denver and the Auraria Media Center will produce a 60-minute show for each candidate. Our media partners in this project include PBS12, Univision Colorado, Colorado Public Radio, and the Colorado Sun. The sessions and coverage will air starting the week of October 17. It is no surprise that our students insist on authenticity from our elected officials, as they will have to live with their decisions. The Solution Studio will allow you, Colorado voters, to benefit from that knowledge and insistence, too.
