Year-end Giving at MSU Denver
There are a number of ways you can make your year-end gift to support our students and programs while taking advantage of tax savings opportunities. Qualifying gifts may be eligible for a Colorado Enterprise Zone Tax Credit, as well.
Charitable Giving Considerations
’Gift Bunching’ and Donor Advised Funds
Making generous contributions over many years demonstrate your commitment to MSU Denver, but the tax deductions you receive may not exceed the standard deduction when filing your taxes in April 2020. You may consider ’Gift Bunching’ multiple years of charitable contributions into a single year, allowing you to itemize your deductions in year one (1) and taking the standard deduction in the following years.
You can also support MSU Denver via contributions from your Donor Advised Fund.
Giving from your Retirement Account
If you have traditional IRAs and are over the age of 70½, you are required to take a distribution for the 2020 tax year based on the balance of your accounts as of December 31, 2019.
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), sometimes known as a “charitable IRA rollover,” allows you to make a charitable gift of up to $100,000 from a traditional IRA without adding to your taxable income. There is no corresponding tax deduction for this gift, but the deduction of taxable income actually increases the benefit to you. Payments must be made directly to a public charity, and cannot be made to a donor-advised fund or private foundations.
Estate Plan Updates
If you haven't done so already, this is a good time to review wills, trusts and other estate planning documents to ensure that they reflect any changes in your personal or financial situations that occurred in 2020. Perhaps your family has grown, you've acquired assets that need to be accounted for or simply have a different perspective on how the estate should be handled.
When donors leave their legacy at MSU Denver with a planned gift, they ensure future students have students access to educational opportunities that lead to academic, professional and personal success. Members of MSU Denver’s Legacy Society have committed more than $13 million in support to our students through their estate plans. Please visit MSU Denver Legacy for more information.
If you have any questions, please contact University Advancement at 303-615-0065 or a specific development officer to discuss your year-end giving plans and how we can help you make sure your gift is received on time and designated to your specific area of interest.
Please note: Our office is typically closed for an extended period near the end of December each year.
