Thousand-Dollar Awards Available to English Majors

 

Two Scholarships Awarded in December 2019:

 

Linguistics Endowed Scholarship (only available in Fall)

This scholarship was proposed and created by faculty and friends of the Linguistics Program at the MSU Denver. Its purpose is to provide scholarships for students who have a declared major or minor in linguistics. Recipient(s) will be notified during Fall 2019 finals week.

Applicants are to submit the following information by 5 pm November 30, 2019 to les@msudenver.edu:

  • A statement (no more than 300 words) explaining why you chose to study Linguistics and/or what about the field continues to interest you
  • A copy of a current MSU Denver transcript

 

Future Teacher Award (available for those student teaching in Spring 2020):

Established to help a promising new teacher with tuition during their demanding student-teaching semester.

    • English/Secondary Education major
    • Min GPA of 3.0
    • Must be student teaching during the semester award is received
    • Does not have to be a Colorado resident
    • Please submit a unit plan from 4600 or 4640 along with a 3-5 page essay describing your vision for your secondary language arts classroom.
    • Applicants are to turn in the items above by 5 p.m. November 30, 2019 to Drs. Gloria Eastman or Jill Adams (KC 436 and KC444) or to the English Department Office (KC 402).

To apply for any MSU Denver scholarship, including those offered by the English Department, please access the MSU Denver application site and follow these instructions:

      1. Go to msudenver.edu/financialaid/scholarships/
      2. Fill out the MSU Denver General Scholarship Application. One of the requirements is an essay. This essay is separate from any writing samples an English Department scholarship may require.
      3. Once the General Application is filed, applicants are able to access the list of all scholarships available at MSU Denver.
      4. Look for English Department scholarships as listed below.
      5. Click on the appropriate scholarship and follow instructions.
      6. Applicants may apply for more than one English Department scholarship and for any other MSU Denver scholarship for which they qualify.

We offer six scholarships that each provide $1,000 toward tuition. We recommend applying for all scholarships for which you qualify. The following scholarships are open for Spring 2020. Deadline for application is March 1, 2020.

 


Dorothea Brooke Endowed Scholarship

Established by a generous anonymous donor and named for the protagonist of George Eliot’s Middlemarch.

      • English major
      • Min. GPA of 3.0
      • Financial need, based on FAFSA or Dreamer Application on file with MSU Denver
      • Taking 12 credit hours or more during semester scholarship received
      • Does not have to be a Colorado resident or US Citizen
      • Please submit an essay of 5-7 pages on a literary work.

Dr. Paul Farkas Memorial Scholarship

Established in honor of Dr. Paul Farkas, a respected colleague and admired American literature professor.

      • English major
      • Min GPA of 3.0
      • Taking 12 credit hours during semester scholarship is received
      • Must be a Colorado resident and a US Citizen
      • Scholarship can be received for multiple years
      • Please submit a 10-15 page critical literary analysis on topic chosen by student.

Future Teacher Award

For student teaching in Fall 2020, we will accept applications after March 1. Here are the qualification details:

Gerald Fenger Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Dr. Gerald Fenger, a respected colleague and admired American literature professor.

      • English major
      • Min GPA of 2.75
      • Have financial need, based on FAFSA or Dreamer application on file with MSU Denver
      • Does not have to be a Colorado resident or US citizen
      • Please submit an essay of 5-7 pages on American literature.

Candy Lee Osgood Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Candy Lee Osgood, an MSU Denver graduate.

      • English major
      • Min GPA of 3.0
      • Woman
      • Renewable for multiple years
      • Does not have to be a Colorado resident or US citizen
      • Please submit a creative writing sample not to exceed 10 pages. This text could be an excerpt of a longer work.
