Technically Speaking

When implementing OS updates in the Metropolitan State University of Denver computing environment, Information Technology Services considers how any changes brought by these updates might impact the security, accessibility and/or functionality of that environment. ITS looks for a low-impact time to apply these updates once they have been tested and approved. All major OS updates will be targeted for the week after spring grades are due and before Maymester begins. This year, the upgrade will begin May 22.

Security and minor updates will continue to be rolled out monthly. For more information on MSU Denver’s system update schedule, please see How are operating system updates performed on MSU Denver computers?

Windows devices: Windows 10 22H2

The latest major build of Windows 10 will roll out to all MSU Denver Windows machines as required beginning the week of May 22, with different deadlines and grace periods for single- and multi-user devices. Windows updates were previously delivered through Software Center, but now they will be available in the Update & Security section of the Windows Settings app.

As a part of this update, ITS is rolling out new device management software, Microsoft Intune, which will run alongside existing management software. Intune will allow ITS to manage Windows devices through the cloud without the need for a local or VPN connection, meaning computers will no longer need to be on campus or connected to GlobalProtect to receive Windows updates. The software will be unintrusive once installed, but you may notice a new app installed called “Intune Management Extension.”

Microsoft has announced that 22H2 is the last major update to Windows 10. Cumulative and security updates will continue to be provided through 2025, but users will eventually need to upgrade to Windows 11 to remain supported. ITS is investigating Windows 11 in the MSU Denver computing environment and will provide more information.

Apple devices: macOS Ventura

The latest version of macOS comes with improvements to security, Safari, Spotlight and a lot more. Staff and faculty members with an assigned MSU Denver Apple computer will be able to upgrade through Self Service beginning the week of May 22. Multi-user devices will be upgraded to Ventura as required, and ITS will contact lab coordinators to schedule these upgrades.
