Although Laci Gonzalez (pictured left) loves sports, she wasn’t practicing pitches or running laps at this year’s summer camp. Instead, she was discovering an aha moment with journalism, thanks to the Write on Sports summer camp at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Gonzalez previously hated writing assignments, but that started to shift after the program introduced her to the many facets of sports reporting, including a visit from Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post. Her reconciliation with writing reflects the zigzaggy pathways of many Roadrunner scholars.Not only does the summer program aim to help middle-school students such as Gonzalez with writing skills, but it serves as a launching point for students to continue their studies with MSU Denver as they go on to pursue sports-media careers.
