Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. statue. This year’s Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Awards Ceremony panel discussion just got a fresh voice.

Stephen Brackett – arts ambassador, activist and MC for Denver-based hip-hop group Flobots – will join the group of academic experts to engage in critical dialogue on the event’s 2021 theme, “KNOW JUSTICE, KNOW PEACE.”

A graduate of Denver’s East High School, Brackett parlayed the success of his group’s 2005 hit “Handlebars” into community engagement, helping to launch Youth on Record, a music-education and empowerment organization. Read more about Brackett in this Westword profile of 9 People to Watch in Denver’s Culture Scene.

The panel begins at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 15, following the formal awards ceremony (9-11 a.m.) hosted by Roadrunners alum Amber Mozet.

Other confirmed panelists for the marquee annual Metropolitan State University of Denver event include keynote speaker Melina Abdullah, Ph.D.; Andrea Borrego, Ph.D., MSU Denver professor of criminal justice and criminology; and Michael Benitez, Ph.D., vice president for Diversity and Inclusion at MSU Denver.

In lieu of a registration fee, the planning committee has asked attendees to make a donation to the MSU Denver Emergency Fund.
