The meeting Wednesday of the Metropolitan State University of Denver President’s Cabinet opened with an update from Faculty Senate President Katia Campbell, Ph.D.
On Sept. 18, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee will vote on the Intellectual Property Policy and review a new statement of principles on campus speech. Academic policies on student overload, course equivalencies, credit acceptance from nonaccredited institutions and more are under review. Members will also consider a bylaw change to allow an Executive Committee member to sit on the Graduate Council.
Before his presentation of the Phase II Fiscal Year 2019-20 Proposed Budget, Larry Sampler, chief operating officer, applauded dedicated faculty and staff members who went the extra mile for a student in need over the holiday weekend.
“It thrills me to see this level of passion, professionalism and expertise applied to a student population that probably hasn’t benefited from that kind of care and attention,” Sampler said.
He then delivered a summary of estimated revenue and allocations, which the Board of Trustees will review Friday. State support, estimated tuition revenue, mandatory costs and investment in student success were balanced against the proposed reallocation of Summer Revenue Sharing, 3% salary adjustment, CUPA maintenance, top branch priorities and support for students affected by the tuition window closure. The proposal would add $870,600 to the University’s institutional base reserve. More information will be available following the Board of Trustees’ meeting Friday.
- The Council of Chairs, represented by Shaun Schafer, Ph.D., Journalism and Media Production, is developing a policy for chair evaluation and removal — as well as better descriptions of roles and responsibilities.
- Cathy Lucas, vice president, Strategy, reported that Welcome Back and TEDx MSU Denver have sold out. Welcome Back — including an exciting brand launch — will be livestreamed.
- Strategic Plan 2025 efforts netted roughly 5,000 ideas, which have been narrowed down into concept papers that will be presented at the Sept. 23 Vision Conference, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Center for Advanced Visualization and Experiential Analysis. Stay tuned to the Early Bird for more details.
- Christine Márquez-Hudson, vice president of University Advancement, reported that the 2018-19 fiscal year saw $5.8 million in gifts and $3.7 in planned giving, and the endowment topped $15 million. The University also increased its unique-donor base, engaged 5,817 alumni and established ambitious engagement and donor-relationship goals.
- Liz Hinde, Ph.D., founding dean, School of Education, noted the work of the Transfer Process Task Force to improve the transfer experience and efficiently gather and use transfer data.
- Student Government Assembly President Danielle Holmes shared an effort to provide support for students completing Department of Health and Human Services assistance applications.
- Provost Vicki Golich, Ph.D., discussed the termination of the current Summer Revenue Sharing process and the challenge to develop a new process by Nov. 1 for next summer. This will include research of models used at other institutions and ways to grow summer enrollment.
- Will Simpkins, Ed.D., vice president for Student Affairs, announced the 2019 Real College Survey, which was emailed to students Wednesday. The survey gauges food and housing security and this year will be piloted among faculty and staff as well.
- Simpkins added that year-to-year enrollment has declined by 3.3%, reminding the group of important admissions and financial aid
- The Classroom to Career Hub Industry Partnerships Team now has eight members representing health care, education, energy, aerospace, hospitality and more. The position of director of industry partnership is posted.
- Anthony Grant, Ph.D., director, Athletics, encouraged attendees to support fall athletics, which play a big role in Homecoming Week. The new fall event runs Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
- Metza Templeton, representing the Staff Senate, announced that ballots go out Monday for Staff Senate officers.
- Kevin Taylor, chief information officer and associate vice president for Information Technology Services, reminded Roadrunners (especially iPhone users) to keep all devices updated for safety.
