12 years of outstanding progress for MSU Denver
Achieving HSI status.
July 27, 2017
In 2007, then-President Jordan outlined an ambitious goal to become a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by 2018 and convened a task force to set out the next steps. A follow-up task force was formed in 2015 to take MSU Denver to the goal by identifying and recommending specific strategies.
From a starting point in 2007 of Hispanic full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment of 12.5 percent, we are one percentage point away (24 percent) from achieving HSI status, which requires 25 percent. That could happen as soon as fall.
In Colorado, with one of the largest Latinx populations in the U.S. – over 31 percent within the city of Denver – achieving HSI status would open doors to more federal funding aimed at enhancing our institutional capacity to serve all students. And it says we are a critical element of the economic and cultural fabric of the greater Denver metropolitan community.
