I graduated from DeVry Institute of Technology, Phoenix, as it was called back then, in 1981 with an A.S. in Electronics Engineering Technology.  I spent the next nine years growing my own business repairing televisions.

After growing tired of working on old worn out televisions, I went back to school in 1990 and earned a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Denver.  During that time I mostly worked for Automatic Data Processing in Wheatridge and Seakr Engineering in Centennial.

During my graduate schooling, I began teaching evening classes and labs for UCD and have been doing it part-time for the last 16 years.  I find teaching to be the most rewarding kind of work I've ever done.

Ivo Georgiev is a computer-systems engineer, an adjunct professor in computer engineering and a technology entrepreneur. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in computer science from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

He spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow in the Computational Bioscience Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is an avid learner and has been taking online courses since their inception, in various subjects such as Computational Neuroscience, Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, among others.

He has worked for half a dozen information-technology startups in Silicon Valley and Eastern Europe, starting as a systems analyst and progressing to chief technology officer. He has been teaching college-level computer-systems courses at CU Boulder, CU Denver and MSU Denver for 10 years. His first startup, TeraFold Biologics, was focused on computational discovery and preclinical validation of alternative protein scaffolds for drug delivery to brain tumors. His current startup, Marsian School, is creating artificial-intelligence agents for personalized domain-agnostic learning assistance.

Georgiev is working on dedicating his career to contributing to three broad domains: natural and artificial intelligence; long-term sustainable ecosystems; and the human colonization of the solar system. He loves the outdoors, the elements and traveling. He runs, swims, skis, climbs, bikes or sails on a daily basis. He has visited 45 countries. He speaks Bulgarian and English fluently, can get by in French, Spanish and Russian, and knows enough Chinese to surprise the guests at parties.

Personal Biography Statement

An experienced executive, entrepreneur and business advisor, John brings over 35 years of experience to MSU Denver and Business Consulting.

With advanced degrees in physics and engineering, John began his career as a consulting engineer focusing on power and alternative energy in the electric power industry.

John then moved on to GE where he focused on technical training, service and sales on a global basis for the locomotive and mining businesses.

Following GE, John moved to a Siemens project team building a new advanced manufacturing plant in Arizona, and was program lead of a high tech joint venture with a company out of Europe while driving sales and business development.

Nortel recruited John for business development in their fiber optic division. Success lead to working in a Nortel skunk works formed to develop telecom/datacom products and services for the Cable TV marketplace.

John was then recruited as VP - Special Projects & Marketing for a world leading contract manufacturing company to help turn around the company and position it for transition.

John then moved back to Nortel as a VP - Cable Media Networks to continue to grow the business he had left and facilitate the merger of a large data acquisition into his group resulting in P&L responsibility for a $430M division.

John resigned from Nortel to work in the Venture Capital space, where he successfully funded technologies out of Sandia. This lead to business consulting and an M&A firm which he sold in 2008 to spent 4 years at Apple building a technology B2B sales team targeting the small/medium business market.

Feeling constrained, John elected to re-enter the business consulting space where he again looks forward to coaching, and providing exit planning strategies and services to technology based business owners while working with Metropolitan State University, guiding MSU technology students on their engineering career journey.
