Explore the intersection of the arts and social change!

Tuesdays 4-5:30 pm  •  February 25 - April 28, 2020 (9 weeks)  •  Final Performance April 28, 2020

CVA and the MSU Denver dance program are joining forces to offer Movement (Art+Dance), a unique community-based workshop for middle and high school students. This nine week workshop series offers young people the opportunity to participate in a dynamic creative process at the intersection of artmaking and social change. This workshop integrates visual art practices with explorations in improvisation and choreography for an exciting interdisciplinary experience.

Each week, students will engage in lively discussions and creative activities about social justice issues that are important to them. Students will work with CVA art education professionals and MSU Denver dance majors to develop dance and compositional skills, and to create a short performance work that incorporates visual art elements. The workshop will culminate with students sharing their socially-engaged creative work with the public.

FAQs

Who can participate? Middle and high school students currently enrolled in grades 6-12 for the 2019-2020 academic year are welcome to register. No prior dance or visual art experience required

Do I need to be an artist or a dancer to participate? No! Any student who is interested in broadly exploring the arts is encouraged to apply. Acceptance decisions are not based on artistic experience or ability. All skill levels are welcome as part of this community-based arts experience.

How much does it cost? The Movement (Art+Dance) Workshop is a FREE program. Education programs at CVA are generously supported by our sponsors, donors and members.

Do I need to purchase supplies for my child? No. All art supplies and materials for class are provided free of cost.

Do I need to purchase dance shoes for my child? No. All dance work can be performed in bare feet, so it is not necessary to purchase any dance shoes.

What should my child wear to this class? Comfortable clothing that allows students to move with ease is the best option. Hair should be pulled away from the face and excessive and/or dangling jewelry should be removed. A water bottle is also recommended.

Are there any transportation costs? There are no transportation costs. You will be responsible for arranging transportation to and from CVA for your child.

Can I still register my child if the session has already started? Yes, but don’t wait too long! Participants may be admitted after the first session, but no later than that due to the community-based nature of the project.

Is my child required to attend every week? We understand that illnesses, emergencies, vacations and other things come up, but it is important that students commit to coming each week for the purpose of group cohesion and performance preparation. Students will be taking part in a collaborative process and their presence and participation will be integral to the creative work that the group develops each week.
