Department of Communication Studies
Overview
The Department of Communication Arts and Sciences offers Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Communication Studies and in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences (SLHS).
Communication Studies majors can choose an emphasis in:
Organizational Communication
Rhetoric, Ethics & Social Justice
Stratregic Relationship Maintenance
Students may also minor in Communication Studies or in Digital Media.
Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences majors can prepare for a graduate degree in either:
Speech-language Pathology
Audiology
Or choose the Childhood Communication concentration
Students may also minor in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences
Additionally, the SLHS program offers two certificates:

Communication Studies Departmental Mission Statement
The Department of Communication Studies provides educational opportunities centered on communication for a diverse urban population by offering a full range of introductory, advanced, and collaborative teacher/learner centered curricula.
The department achieves this mission through the faculty’s dedication to excellence in instruction, both classroom and technologically mediated, professional renewal, and participation in partnerships with public schools, businesses, media organizations, health care agencies, and non-profit organizations.
The department continues to develop and to offer opportunities for students. Our curricula provide theoretical foundations and practical applications to prepare students for graduate school, employment, and personal and aesthetic development, all grounded in a strong liberal arts tradition.

CAS professor Dr. Karen Lollar was featured in the April 2016 issue of Communication Currents. Dr. Lollar discussed her research on strategic invisibility for the publication, which is circulated by the National Communication Association.
