NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL (NPHC) 

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. is composed of the nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities also known as The Divine Nine. It was organized in May 1930 at Howard University, Washington D.C.  

Currently there is two NPHC organizations represented at MSU Denver: The Zeta Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and The Delta Delta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Both chapters are city/statewide NPHC chapters and operate as one chapter in multiple Higher Education Institutions.  


The nine organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council are:  

  • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. | Founded on December 4th, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York  
  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. | Founded on January 15th, 1908 at Howard University in Washington D.C.  
  • Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. | Founded on January 5th, 1911 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana  
  • Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. | Founded on November 17th, 1911 at Howard University in Washington D.C.  
  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. | Founded on January 13th, 1913 at Howard University in Washington D.C.  
  • Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. | Founded on January 9th, 1914 at Howard University in Washington D.C.  
  • Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc | Founded on January 16th, 1920 at Howard University in Washington D.C.  
  • Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. | Founded on November 12th, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.  
  • Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. | Founded on September 19th, 1963 at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma are the Fraternity’s most valuable resource and strength. They are the primary means by which the Phi Beta Sigma objectives will be achieved. In order to accomplish the Fraternity’s objectives, it is essential that systems are instituted that effectively embody “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity” and promote brotherhood, scholarship and service.
