Professional Development for Advisors

Akin to advisor training, professional development opportunities are abundant at the institutional, local, regional, and national levels. Professional development may relate to the advising field directly, or may strengthen an advisors understanding of the information, relational, and conceptual components of their work through meaningful engagement with material in a related area (communication, strategy, psychology, counseling, career growth and professional goal setting, just to name a few!).  The Advising Systems office works to promote and synthesize known opportunities - aligning them with the core pillars of the field and MSU Denver's defined core competencies for advising. 

MSU Denver strives to align its advising pillars with those of the global community for academic advising, NACADA. 

NACADA is an association of professional advisors, counselors, faculty, administrators, and students working to enhance the educational development of students.

NACADA promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students. NACADA provides a forum for discussion, debate, and the exchange of ideas pertaining to academic advising through numerous activities and publications.

MSU Denver's thriving professional development community creates a wealth of campus opportunities for professional and faculty advisors alike.  From theories that advisors must understand, and knowledge advisors must gain, to skills that enable them to convey their important message - the advising community at MSU Denver provides every opportunity to learn. 

Advisors are encouraged to attend a variety of campus events, workshops, conferences and symposiums offered free or at low cost on the Auraria Campus.  Past, and recurring events, include but are not limited to:

Advisors may look to pursue professional development off campus, through course/certificate/degree completion or conference attendance, etc.  Reasons to join an organization or take part in a course include:

  • Meet other professionals in the field
  • Opportunity to showcase your experience through peer to peer discussions or public speaking
  • See what opportunities and challenges are in the field
  • Access to experts in the field – speakers, other members, sponsors
  • Discounts or free books, magazines, access to webinars, e-learning
  • Free or almost free training – most of the organizations have meetings focused on educational content
  • Resume building
  • Opportunity to secure new references
