Course for OER adoption:  GEG 1300 Human Geography

Semester of planned adoption:  Fall 2020

Project summary:  The project will implement an OER textbook in GEG 1300 to replace the current text.  The current text runs upward of $90-$140 in print and $45 for the digital edition.  The cost of the text is an obstacle for many students to keep up with the course readings.  Supplemental materials, including test and practice questions, will be developed to align with the text.

Course for OER adoption:  GEG 1000 World Regional Geography

Semester of planned adoption:  Spring 2020

Project summary:  The instructor’s plan is to use World Regional Geography by Finlayson as a replacement for the textbook used for the past several years.  The OER textbook that is being adopted hits all of the major points in each world region while also being more succinct.  The brevity of the OER text and its accessibility on Blackboard will make it easier for students to read.  By using the OER textbook, students will save anywhere from $60 - $150.

Course for OER adoption:  GEG 1700 Principles of Sustainability

Semester for planned adoption:  Fall 2020

Project summary: Developed the General Studies course, Principles of Sustainability GEG 1700, in 2018, and have offered the course for the last 3 semesters. The course was developed with the intention of providing the fundamental literacy to MSU Denver students about the socio, economic, and ecological dimensions of sustainability due to the increasing societal awareness for sustainable development. After assessing the few available textbooks on the market, decided to include one textbook and complement it, to cover the issues that were not addressed in the textbook, with chapters and/or journal articles. Excited about the opportunity to find and adopt an OER textbook that could be a better fit for the course in regard to the scope of issues covered. Thus, minimizing the inclusion of materials from other sources and provide students with a comprehensive textbook covering most, if not all, course contents.

Course for OER adoption:  GEG 1910 Global Water Concerns

Semester for planned adoption:  Summer 2020

Project summary:  Creating an online version of GEG 1910 Global Water Concerns, which is a general studies course that addresses water science as well as global issues of water scarcity, climate change impacts on water resources, and planning for future water supplies.  Adapting content from an existing OER, provided by Pennsylvania State University.  Also developing fifteen modules that will encompass introductory topics in climatology, physical hydrology, water conflict and sustainable water management.

Project summary:  This OER project will implement the World Regional Geography textbook by Caitlin Finlayson in GEG 1000 (World Regional Geography).  Students will save from $40 to upwards of $140, the current costs for the electronic and hardcopy texts, respectively.  The chapters in this text are well-illustrated and the content is concisely presented-- accessible to English-speaking and ESL students alike.
