Dr. Devika Banerji

Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Studies

Course for OER adoption:  CAS 3110 Leadership Communication & CAS 3760 Diversity Communication in the U.S.

Semester of planned adoption:  Fall 2019

Project summary:  Adopted the OER resource “Leading with Cultural Intelligence” for CAS 3110 and CAS 3760.  The online text was used in addition to a textbook in each of the classes.  The adoption of the open resource helped bring student textbook costs down by $30 per student for each class.  Both the Leadership and Diversity classes have a textbook cost less than $20 per student.  The intent is to incorporate the same text resource for future classes and introduce more tests and assignment that use the open text more comprehensively than it was in Fall 2019.

Dr. Devika Banerji

Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Studies

Course for OER adoption:  CAS 2710 Team and Group Communication

Semester for planned adoption:  Spring 2020

Project summary:  The OER has been adopted in the Spring 2020 section and replaced the textbook that was previously in use.  The open resource is being adapted to class needs and additional materials are created (like test, learning activities, and case studies) to assist in successful implementation of the class.

Dr. Brenden Kendall

Associate Professor, Department of Communication Studies

Course for OER adoption:  COMM 1100:  Fundamentals of Oral Communication

Semester for planned adoption:  Fall 2020

Project summary:  The Department of Communication Studies is launching an all new introductory course in Fall 2020, “COMM 1100:  Fundamentals of Oral Communication.”  The course is purposely built with and for Open Educational Resources (OERs) to promote student retention, engagement, and success.  The course will be, across sections, one of the most-enrolled at the university each semester because it satisfies the General Studies – Oral Communication requirement.  Communication Studies estimates that the use of OERs in this course could save our student body over $100,000 in the 2020-2021 academic year alone.  One of the faculty developing this course has begun drafting the first OER-only introductory communication studies textbook, which can make an impact at institutions across the nation.

Dr. Rich Kessel

Lecturer, Department of Communication Studies

Course for OER adoption:  CAS 3910 Advanced Public Speaking, HON 1013 Honors Public Speaking

Semester for planned adoption:  Fall 2020 for HON 1013, Spring 2021 for CAS 3910

Project summary:  Recommended students in CAS 3910 use an OER resource (“Stand Up, Speak Out” in Spring 2020) if they no longer had access to their introductory public speaking textbook. At 539 pages, the text is too long for even an advanced course. This grant allow to adapt (i.e., shorten) the text. The text will replace the current textbook in HON 1013, eliminating textbook costs for the course (currently $72). The more concise textbook will replace the current OER in CAS when it is offered again in Spring 2021. After soliciting feedback, would like to see the text further refined and, after identifying the best low-cost printing option, make it available in printed form as well, with an eye towards making it the textbook for CAS 1010 – Presentational Speaking.
