Personal Biography Statement

I graduated from The University of Southern California in 1988 (Go Trojans!).
My experience prior to teaching at Metro was in the areas of Mental Health and Medical Social Work. I specialized in treating and advocating for children and families with a history of domestic violence, sexual and physical abuse. I began teaching as an affiliate professor at MSCD department of Social Work in the Fall of 1999. In the past twenty five years my development as a professional and as a social worker has evolved and changed. Due do my personal experiences, being bilingual/bicultural and the changes in today's world my interests have widened to a more global perspective. I have become interested in issues of acculturation and diversity and how as social workers we can be of service to others at a community and global level. As Service Learning coordinator I strive to provide opportunities for students to develop and/or increase their sense of civic responsibility and community engagement.

Teaching Philosophy

My personal philosophy and vision of teaching is twofold. First, I embark on the task of teaching as a believer in the student's (yours) capacity to embrace their highest potential, their desire to acquire academic knowledge and the ability to develop new skills in the field of social work. Second, I integrate the social work framework as a part of my understanding of the student's behavior and their responsibilities. I see my role as a facilitator of critical thinking and as a provider of expertise. However, I feel that the students must own their learning and embrace a process that at times may feel cumbersome and overwhelming. I expect my students to be curious about the world they live in, to explore different ways of approaching a changing environment and to apply the ethics and values of the social work profession to their classroom and professional behavior.
