Kudos

We extend kudos this week to faculty, staff and students who continue to distinguish themselves and MSU Denver through their accomplishments.

MSU Denver’s student Internal Audit course, part of the Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAcc) Program in the School of Business, was runner-up for the Bizzell Innovative Achievement Award. Presented by the Southwestern Business Deans’ Association (SWBDA) and sponsored by Bloomberg Businessweek, the award recognizes business programs for excellence and innovation. MSU Denver received $1,000 that will go toward student scholarships.

The Internal Audit course tackles the problem of funding cuts to higher education by taking on the University’s internal audit responsibilities, shifting them from an administrative and finance function, to graduate students enrolled in the faculty-supported, service-learning course. The course is estimated to have saved $120,000 in annual administrative costs, while doubling audit coverage and efficiency.

MSU Denver students Audrey Goodman and Taylor Gilman are recipients of the Summer 2013 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program awards. Both students are enrolled in study-abroad programs to Turkey this summer. Goodman will be doing a specialized program with Colorado teachers and MSU Denver students, and Gilman will be studying journalism with the Institute for Education in International Media.  The Gilman scholarship program offers awards to undergraduate students with good academic standing who have been accepted into a study-abroad program and who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding.

Food for Thought (FFT), a partnership with the Hospitality, Tourism and Events Department, will receive a $20,000 grant from Walmart after finishing in the top 60 of nonprofit organizations in Walmart’s Fighting Hunger Together national voting campaign. The HTE Department provides space and student volunteers to assemble weekend “powersacks” of donated food for low-income DPS elementary schoolchildren.
