Music Department Scholarships

Music at MSU Denver offers many scholarship opportunities to current students in the Music Department. Eligibility criteria are distinctive for each scholarship and music students are encouraged to apply for all applicable scholarships in every semester of enrollment. Financial need is not a criterion for eligibility (unless specified), nor are students eliminated for consideration if they have received other forms of financial aid or have received the same scholarship in the past. International students may be eligible for Music Department scholarships, depending on their status.

Music Talent Award

Offered in the fall semester, the Music Talent Award is available to all music majors and minors. Applications for the Music Talent Award are available from the music office (AR-287) every September and must be returned to the music office by the given deadline. Award amounts are determined by instrument area coordinators and ensemble directors, and vary according to the applicant's music department participation and performance excellence.

Students applying for a Music Talent Award must meet the following criteria:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.00
  • Minimum of 6 credit hours enrollment at the time of application
  • Exceptional performance qualities within the concentration area
  • Cannot be in default or owe any refund/payment of federal, state, or institutional aid

If awarded, the Music Talent Award is applied to the fall semester during which the student applied, as well as the following spring semester. Distribution of the spring semester award is subject to the student's maintenance of qualifications, including GPA, minimum credit hours, and ensemble participation. Awards are distributed mid-semester, and are applied directly to the student's account.

Named Scholarships

Our generous donors provide many different named scholarships to music students.  Each of the named scholarships has unique criteria for eligibility.  Applications are available from the music office (AR-287) every mid-March and must be returned back to the music office by the given deadline.

For each of the named scholarships, applicants must submit an essay addressing the applicant's background and qualifications for receiving the scholarship, a description of the applicant's career plans, and a statement specifically addressing the eligibility criteria for that particular scholarship. Recipients of the named scholarships are determined by a scholarship committee made up of Music Department faculty and in some cases, the donor.

If awarded, the named scholarship is applied to the fall and spring semester of the academic year following the spring semester in which the student applied. Eligibility requirements for each scholarship must be met at the time of application and at the time of disbursement.

Below are the specific criteria for each of the named scholarships. Please note, not every named scholarship is available every year; the application will list the available scholarships for any given year.
