The 4th Annual MSU Denver Horn Day

Metropolitan State University of Denver, Department of Music, is pleased to present the fourth annual MSU Denver Horn Day. Students of the horn are invited to attend this one-day event at MSU Denver on Thursday, February 21, 2013 between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm (optional additional activities will be held until 4:00 pm) in the Kenneth King Academic and Performing Arts Center on the Auraria Campus, 855 Lawrence Way, Denver, Colorado.

Event Highlights

• Guest Artist: William Klingelhoffer, Co-Principal Horn with the San Francisco Opera.

• Optimal Performance on the Horn: A group warm-up session that emphasizes individual note practice, intervals, flexibility, scales, and tone production.

• Make Your Band and Orchestra Music Sparkle: A group technique class that develops effective practice strategies for large ensemble music through the study of etudes.

• Playing Together with Great Intonation: A group horn choir reading session and informal performance.

Event Instructors

Alexander Ritter George

‌‌Alexander Ritter George is a member of the Affiliate Faculty at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where he teaches applied horn and music theory courses. Dr. George founded MSU Denver Horn Day, an annual event that brings horn students from the Front Range region of Colorado together for a day-long series of horn activities.

Prior to his appointment at MSU Denver, Dr. George served as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His writings on horn literature and pedagogy have been published in The Horn Call: The Refereed Journal of the International Horn Society. He has presented clinics for the Aspen Music Festival and School, Colorado Music Educators Association, and El Sistema in Venezuela. He can be heard playing Principal Horn on two wind ensemble recordings: A Tent for the Sun with the University of Colorado Wind Symphony, and The Winds of Summer with the Duquesne University Wind Ensemble.

Dr. George premiered Thom Ritter George’s Concerto for Horn with the Idaho State Civic Symphony in 2007. He won first prize at the 2007 Plowman Chamber Music Competition as Solo Horn of the Arundo Winds. As an orchestral musician, he has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Ballet Orchestra, and National Repertory Orchestra.

Alexander Ritter George earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Horn Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Music degree from Duquesne University, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music. His primary teachers were Jerome Ashby, William Caballero, and Michael Thornton. He plays on an M series Elkhart Conn 8D, “The Mile High,” dating from 1969, restored by Ron Pinc of Chicago, a Yamaha YHR-863 "Schmidt," and a Holton H200 descant horn.

William Klingelhoffer

‌William Klingelhoffer, one of two Co-Principal Horns in San Francisco’s Opera Orchestra, studied in Chicago with Stu Liechti, Nancy Fako, Frank Brouk, and Dale Clevenger. He began playing professionally with the Chicago Lyric Opera at the age of nineteen.

In the 40+ years since he has played Principal Horn for the Opera Companies of Chicago, Houston, and Santa Fe, played extra and toured with the Chicago and San Francisco Symphonies, played for Films, Radio/TV commercials, and Musical Shows, toured and recorded with the Summit Brass Ensemble, appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, given Masterclasses at International Brassfests held at Indiana University and Long Beach, California; University of Victoria, Canada; and Sacramento State University. Bill was a Guest Artist at the International Horn Society Symposium in 2009. The San Francisco Opera Horn section played excerpts from Wagner's Ring for the opening concert of the 2011 IHS Symposium at San Francisco State University.
