MSU Denver in the Media -- Sept. 11, 2012

MSU Denver�s direct impact in the Denver and Colorado community continues to be demonstrated through stories in local and national news media. Key coverage includes the stories on our Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate, the official July 1 name change and the Space Commercialization program. Also, our professors have offered their expertise to the news media on a variety of topics, including the Aurora shooting tragedy, airport security, federal banking policy and social issues. These stories demonstrate the diverse ways MSU Denver educates Colorado by offering relevant programs that meet the changing needs of the local workforce.



The Denver Post on September 7 interviewed President Stephen Jordan and other Colorado university presidents for a cover story about the challenges and opportunities facing Colorado higher education.  


On August 21, President Stephen Jordan was interviewed by The Chronicle of Higher Education about the loss of state funding for Colorado public colleges and what it means for the future of education.


On August 19, President Stephen Jordan was a guest on CNN to discuss MSU Denver�s new Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate. He was interviewed again on CNN on August 22.


The Denver Post on July 19 published President Stephen Jordan�s guest commentary about how college athletic programs should reflect the overall mission of the institution in light of the Penn State scandal. On July 12, The Denver Post interviewed President Stephen Jordan and a CU official about measures they�ve taken to prevent a similar scandal like the one at Penn State. This story was featured again in The Denver Post, Viva Colorado, and the Daily Camera on July 13.


On June 28, President Stephen Jordan was quoted in the Denver Business Journal about the name-change transition. He was also interviewed by YourHub Denver for a September 6 story about costs associated with name change. This story also appeared in The Denver Post on September 10.





On September 9, The Denver Post ran a business section cover story about how MSU Denver is working with Spaceport Colorado to prepare students for space commercialization careers. Aviation and Aerospace Chair and Professor Jeff Forrest and Assistant Professor Tanya Gatlin, student Jason Alvero and alumnus Dennis Heap (�70) were interviewed.


9NEWS on September 7 interviewed Hospitality, Tourism and Events Professor Michael Wray and Affiliate Professor Bruce Warner about the unique elements of MSU Denver�s new Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center. On August 23, 9NEWS interviewed student Bryce Walker and Hospitality, Tourism and Events Chair and Associate Professor Chad Gruhl about how the new Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center benefits students in and out of the classroom.


In August, Forbes ranked MSU Denver No. 600 on its list of America�s Top Colleges. Compiled by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, the ranking focuses "on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, high graduation rates and low-levels of debt."


On August 24, The Denver Post ran a cover story about MSU Denver�s new Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate that included interviews of students who are benefiting from the program.


On August 17, The New York Times ran a feature story about MSU Denver�s new Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate that included the views of students benefiting from the program.

On August 10, Deputy Provost Luis Torres and student Sarahi Hernandez joined a panel on PressTV discussing MSU Denver�s Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate.


On July 11, Democrats for Education Reform published an article titled, �Bold Move for Students in Colorado.� Written by Colorado State Senators Mike Johnston and Pat Steadman, it recognized MSU Denver for its Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate. Community College Week on July 9 covered Colorado Attorney General John Suthers� opposition to the Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate.


On July 6, The Denver Post ran a guest column by Professor Norman Provizer titled, �1982 Supreme Court ruling helps clarify MSU Denver�s Colorado High School/GED Non-resident Tuition Rate.�

On August 26, Associate Professor Jeff Price was interviewed by the San Francisco Examiner regarding allegations that San Francisco International Airport has been clearing suspicious bags without a second screening. Additional articles appeared in the San Francisco Examiner on Aug 27.


On August 21, Associate Professor Jeff Price was interviewed by 7NEWS about the removal of an unruly passenger from a flight in Denver.


7NEWS on July 31 interviewed Assistant Professor Tanya Gatlin about emergency flight procedures following an aircraft bird strike and how that rarely happens in commercial aviation.

On August 2, Affiliate Professor Stacey Hervey was interviewed by FOX31 about a new Department of Homeland Security video to help the public respond during a shooting.


On July 20, Associate Professor Allison Cotton was interviewed by 850KOA about the psychological state of the suspect in the Aurora theater shooting.

On July 11, Associate Professor Jason Janke analyzed and tested unfiltered water for 9NEWS from the Poudre River, Horsetooth Reservoir, and Cherry Creek to see how they compare.



On August 25, Tampa Bay Online featured an article by Associate Professor Alexandre Padilla titled, "For convention, Tampa needs 'free market' attitude about prostitution." On August 23, TribLIVE published a similar article by Padilla, �Free this vice.�


On July 12, Mises Daily featured an article by Emeritus Professor John Cochran titled, �Fractional Reserves and Economic Instability.�


Fox News on July 10 published an opinion piece, �Three ways to reform labor and save our country,� authored by 18 economists and labor experts, including Emeritus Professor John Cochran and Professor Kishore G. Kulkarni.


On July 3, Foreign Policy Journal reported that Emeritus Professor John Cochran was among the witnesses scheduled to testify at Rep. Ron Paul�s hearing titled, �Fractional Reserve Banking and the Federal Reserve: The Economic Consequences of High-Powered Money.�



On August 20, Education News Colorado published �Parent blog: Sending a kid to college� by Assistant Professor Ann Morrison.



On August 15, ThomasNet featured plans by Assistant Professor Devi K. Kalla and Assistant Professor Aaron Brown to integrate students into green manufacturing businesses in Colorado.



On July 26, 9NEWS interviewed Lecturer Keith Fevurly about the drop in mortgage interest rates.

On September 8, 1430AM interviewed Assistant Professor Jackson Lamb about the new Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center.

FOX31 on August 3 interviewed Associate Professor Shawn Worthy about how the Aurora shooting impacts people differently and how families should maintain an open dialogue about the tragedy.


On July 13, Associate Professor Shawn Worthy was interviewed by CBS4 about people�s perception of breastfeeding in public.


In light of the Penn State scandal, Associate Professor Shawn Worthy joined 9NEWS on July 12 to address how parents should approach the issue of abuse in discussions with their children.



On August 22, FOX31 and CW2 interviewed Lecturer Darrin Duber-Smith about consumer interest in the Nike LeBron X athletic shoe.



On July 30, Assistant Professor Cynthia Dormer was interviewed on AM760 about a recent study claiming American children are regressing academically and gaining weight during the summer months.   


Political Science

On August 31, Professor Norman Provizer was interviewed by 9NEWS about the likelihood Colorado voters will favor local school bond measures.


On August 16, Professor Norman Provizer was interviewed by 9NEWS about a dispute between the Douglas County School Board and a documentary filmmaker.


CBS4 on July 29 interviewed Professor Norman Provizer about the continuation of campaign ads following the Aurora theater shooting.


On July 2, Assistant Professor Robert Preuhs was interviewed by Public News Service on Latino voting in the upcoming election.  



On July 18, The Huffington Post published an article titled, �Natural Highs: A Positive Approach to Mood Alteration,� by Professor Harvey Milkman.


Social Work

On August 24, Univision50 interviewed Assistant Professor Marina Pereira-Badwan about the social and psychological elements involved in the New York City shooting.


On August 3, The Greeley Tribune interviewed Instructor Larry Botnick about youth gang involvement.


Univision50 on July 24 interviewed Assistant Professor Marina Pereira-Badwan about the social and psychological reasons for the increased purchase of arms following the Aurora Theater shooting.


On July 21, 7NEWS interviewed Assistant Professor Larry Curry about the grieving process for those impacted by the Aurora shooting.





On August 29, Westword ran an article featuring a letter signed by more than 100 college professors in support of Amendment 64, the Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act. Economics Professor Alexandre Padilla and Psychology Instructor Erika Joye were among those who signed. 


On August 28,the Rapid City Journal [South Dakota] announced alumnus Renee Graves (�91) as one of 13 new teachers entering the Hot Springs school district.


On August 23, Fernandina Beach News-Leader and WJXT Jacksonville profiled alumnus Dave Smith (�78), who is seeking election to the Florida House of Representatives, District 11.


The Canon City Daily Record and The Denver Post on August 19 interviewed student Adrian Tijerina about the influence of the Latino vote in the upcoming election.


On August 18, profiled Affiliate Professor Debra Faulkner and other authors scheduled to speak during the third annual Conversations with Authors hosted by the Loveland branch of the American Association of University Women.


Estes Park Trail-Gazette on August 17 reported that alumnus Tim Rische (�91) is one of six new teachers in the Estes Park School District.


On August 16, Silver City Sun News announced alumnus Daniel Laverty (�12) as the newest member of its news team.


On August 15, FOX31 and CW2 spoke to student Luis Serrano about the struggles he's faced prior to the deferred action immigration policy and what it means to him and other illegal immigrants.


Westword on August 10 profiled Affiliate Professor Jennifer Goodland and her upcoming show featuring her photographs of Colorado towns.


The August issue of 5280 Magazine includes a story about Affiliate Professor Jon Van de Grift and his storm-chasing photography.


EdNews Colorado on August 9 interviewed student Sarahi Hernandez about her plans to seek a work permit after the announcement that undocumented immigrants can apply for deferred action status. The Denver Post also interviewed Hernandez on August 4.


On August 6, announced that alumnus Joseph Parrino (�92) was named senior vice president-Data Center Operations for T5 Data Centers.


On August 4, published an article titled, �Mitchell Leads Colorado Juniors in Kalamazoo,� written by student Julian Bravo.


On July 31, the Aurora Sentinel announced former volleyball player and alumna Kelly Hanlon Dow�s induction into MSU Denver�s 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame.


On July 30, The Wall Street Journal and Bismarck Tribune profiled Olympic coach and alumnus Todd Schmitz (�01). Earlier in July, 7NEWS reported that Schmitz was named an assistant swim coach for team USA in the Olympics.


Our Colorado News on July 26 published an article titled, �CancerFit Exercise Program Benefits Cancer Survivors and Patients,� written by alumnus and head of the CancerFit Program, Sandy Dickman (�04).


On July 25, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Center for Visual Art Creative Director Cecily Cullen will be a juror for the 2013 Winter Park (Fla.) Sidewalk Art Festival.


On July 23, accountingWEB reported that alumnus Ryan Marczewski (�06) was promoted to senior tax consultant by Richey, May & Co., LLP.


Westword on July 19 profiled alumnus Gary Maas (�75), one of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock�s three finalists for the job of independent monitor.


FOX31 on July 12 interviewed Joan McDermott, director of athletics, about the lessons learned from the Penn State scandal.


On July 10, the United States Army welcomed alumnus and Brig. Gen. Laura Richardson (�86) as deputy commanding general of support for the 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas, during a Patch Ceremony on July 5.


On July 8, Daily Inter Lake reported that alumnus Jason Christy (�02) is now the principal of Kila School in Montana.


The Huffington Post on July 5 profiled alumnus, stand-up comedian, and attorney Troy Walker (�08).


YourHub Denver on July 3 profiled alumnus Matthew McLachlan (�10), who invented a device that enhances sound on the iPad.


The Jakarta Post on June 28 profiled alumnus Biem Triani Benyamin (�89), an independent candidate in the gubernatorial election in Indonesia.


On June 28, La Voz profiled alumnus Debra Gallegos (�76), citing her career in civil rights and community involvement.

On August 28, Our Colorado News mentioned the 8th annual Denver Food and Wine festival taking place on the Auraria Campus and in the Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center. MSU Denver student Jessica Ghawi was among those killed during the Aurora theater shooting. Her pursuit of a degree in journalism and the many ways she touched the lives of those close to her were cited by several news outlets, including:

On July 24, MSU Denver student and Aurora shooting survivor Stephen Austin was interviewed by The Denver Post regarding his feelings about surviving the tragedy.


Westword on August 22 interviewed student Nina Dadabhoy about her back-to-school fashion sense.


Rockford Register Star on August 18 profiled former MSU Denver soccer coach Jeremy Aldrich, the new head coach of Hononegah High School girls� soccer program in Rockton, Ill.


The passing of award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch, who wrote a song for MSU Denver to mark its 21st birthday in 1987, was covered in the following media outlets:

La Voz on August 1 mentioned MSU Denver for hosting a College Readiness Camp for incoming 9th graders at select DPS schools.


On July 29,The Gazette in Colorado Springs profiled MSU Denver senior Carl Arnold�s effort to succeed in track and field to honor a fallen friend.


The Denver Business Journal on June 29 announced that NetApp, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., donated a network storage system to MSU Denver that will make it possible for students with disabilities to do their class work remotely rather than have to travel to campus.


The Denver Post and Colorado Daily on July 26 mentioned that MSU Denver is partnering with Goodwill in collecting leftover items from students. 9NEWS also featured the recycle program on July 30. 


The Hattiesburg American on July 22 profiled the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art�s presentation of "Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and Objects" on display July 27-Oct. 6. The exhibit was organized by MSU Denver�s Center for Visual Art.


Ashland Daily Tidings on July 8 announced that Pete Julian, former MSU Denver head men's and women's cross country and track & field coach, was inducted into the University of Portland Hall of Fame.


On July 1, The Denver Post and Viva Colorado mentioned that the Rachel B. Noel Distinguished Professorship was funded by Delta Eta Boule Foundation in a feature story covering its annual gala honoring scholarship recipients.
