MSU Denver announces plans for $12 million athletic complex

President Stephen Jordan today officially announced plans for a state-of-the-art athletic complex that will include baseball, softball and soccer fields and eight tennis courts.

The complex will provide a new home for Roadrunner athletic events as well as academic programs, says Jordan. This will continue the physical transformation underway on our campus and is the kind of facility that our students and student-athletes deserve.

In addition to varsity athletics, intramural sports and academic programs, the University will host activities on the site for the surrounding communitys youth.

The new athletic complex will be located south of the Colfax Avenue viaduct adjacent to Shoshone Street, east of I-25. The site once held various fuel, food and cold-storage facilities and will require some environmental cleanup as part of the development.

The 12.5-acre complex will be the home of six of the Roadrunners 15 sports: baseball, softball, mens and womens soccer, and mens and womens tennis. The three fields will have synthetic turf surfaces.

We have been talking about this facility for a number of years, says Joan McDermott, director of athletics. This will be a first-class facility for our athletic programs and we cant wait to see the project underway.

The projected $12 million athletic complex will be built in phases, with elements of phases two and three conditional on the funds available for construction. Phase one will break ground in January and will include eight tennis courts as well as other site work scheduled for completion in April 2013. Phase two is the baseball and soccer fields and phase three includes the softball field and locker rooms. Architectural renderings of the proposed facility are available at

Through a memorandum of agreement in 2011 with the Auraria Higher Education Center, MSU Denver assumed all campus-shared costs for the complex and its facilities, thus retaining full ownership, management oversight and naming rights.

Donors and sponsors can pledge to support the complex by visiting and clicking on the facility icon. Anyone interested in more information about the facility or in making a donation is encouraged to contact Associate Director of Development Ran Railey at 303-556-5119 or
