MSU Denver Calendar Event
Event Name: Sex Week! Porn: The Goldilocks Dilemma - Too Much? Too Little? Just Right?
Date: Wednesday, March 6, 2013
Location: Sigi's Cabaret (Tivoli 140)
Event Status: Passed
Category: Campus Wide Events
Description: Despite its widespread use, pornography has been vilified as a symptom of personal and cultural depravity and as a cause of rape, aggression and marital dissolution. Yet, in some cases, there may be personal, relational or social value to the use of sexually explicit material. In this presentation, professor Randi Smith and colleague Mary Ann Watson summarize both negative and neutral-to-positive findings about pornography, and then show short segments of sexually explicit material that are used in educational, psychotherapeutic and medical settings.

More about the presenters:
Mary Ann Watson, Ph.D., is a senior faculty member at MSU Denver and assistant chair of the Department of Psychology. Her doctoral work at the University of Pittsburgh and post-doctoral study at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine laid the foundation for her work as a teacher and clinician, specializing in sexology, thanatology and cultural diversity. She has been involved peripherally, then centrally, in the production of 16 video series with instructor's guides that have accompanied textbooks in psychology, anthropology, sociology and political science. She is the author/editor of several texts, workbooks, and numerous articles in professional journals.

Randi Smith, LCSW, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist and associate professor of psychology at MSU Denver. Much of her work has focused on professional ethics, and has resulted in journal articles, book chapters and her current post as chair of the Colorado Board of Psychologist Examiners.
